Funnel of Love - Classic Recordings, 1954-1962 (2CD) (CD)

The original Queen of Rockin' Country, Wanda Jackson has taken the decision in 2019 to finally retire from public life after more than 65 years of making music.

In recognition of her long service and the many great records it has brought us, Jasmine now brings you a second helping of Wanda at her finest, following our well received and strong selling 'Rocking Country Style' double from a couple of years ago.

'Funnel Of Love' goes back to the start of her career as featured female singer with Hank Thompson's Brazos Valley Boys and covers almost 10 years of Wanda's career. It contains two full albums as originally released in 1962, plus every non-album Wanda A and B side that does not appear elsewhere on Jasmine including 'Whirlpool' and the title track, 'Funnel of Love' both of them big favourites in recent years on the Popcorn/R&B scene.

A superb mixture of hillbilly, hardcore rockin' country, teen-style pop and much more besides, 'Funnel Of Love' will surely tick the right boxes for every fan of this genuine Living Legend.

A well-deserved tribute to a great talent - remastered, as always, from the finest available sources - and sure to find quick favour with all who enjoy country music from its Golden Age…

The Complete Modern And Kent Recordings 2CD (Käytetty CD)

PARASTA ROKKAAVAA ROCK`N`ROLL-R&B:TÄ!!!! Thoroughly 'Modern' Etta - here's a long-overdue, definitive 2CD set containing one take of every recording Ms James made for Modern and Kent Records between 1954 and 1958, plus every surviving significant alternate take - remastered from the original Modern tape sources.

This repertoire was recorded in New Orleans and Los Angeles between 1954 and 1958, and features nothing but the cream of each city's session musicians.

Many of the tracks here are undisputed R & B Hall Of Fame classics, including 'The Wallflower' (a.k.a. Roll With Me Henry), 'Good Rockin' Daddy', 'The Pick-Up' and the wild and crazy 'Tough Lover'.
Etta James is now rightly revered as one of R & B's greatest 'Living Legends', her reputation assured by a catalogue that spans over half a century. These are the tracks that forged Etta's reputation as one of R&B's all-time finest female talents.

This is the first time that they have all been reissued in the same place, at the same time - and they have never, ever sounded as good as they do here.

  14. When My Little Girl is Smiling

    Justice Jimmy:
When My Little Girl is Smiling (CD)

A tremendous live performer (he once famously stole the honours on a 1962 Billy Fury package tour), JIMMY JUSTICE was the finest British blue-eyed Soul singer of the immediate pre-Beatles era.

This compilation rounds up everything he recorded for Pye Records between 1960-62, viz: his first seven 45s, a couple of rare European-only EP tracks, and his first LP, the highly-rated The Two Sides Of Jimmy Justice.

Includes his biggest UK hits, 'When My Little Girl Is Smiling', 'Ain't That Funny' and 'Spanish Harlem'.

Also includes his International hits, 'Little Lonely One', 'A Little Bit Of Soap', 'When Love Has Left You' and 'Dawning'.

His LP features a number of his live favourites, notably 'Early In The Morning', 'Hallelujah I Love Her So' and 'What'd I Say'.

This material has been hard to find on CD in recent years, making this a welcome reissue.

  15. Torture

    Jensen Kris:
    Torture (CD)

Kris Jensen is known predominantly for his 1962 hit 'Torture', a song which had originally been custom-written by Felice & Boudleaux Bryant for the Everly Brothers.

However, Jensen had been recording since 1959, and his early R&R/teener releases have long been sought-after collectors' items.

This unique compilation features everything that he recorded between 1959-62, variously for the Colpix, Leader, Kapp and Hickory labels.

Includes hard-to-find regional hits like 'Bonnie Baby', 'School Bus', 'The Jackie Look' (the latter, something of a cult 45), 'Three Vanilla, Two Chocolate, One Pistachio, Ice Cream Cone', 'Don't Take Her From Me', 'Big As I Can Dream' and 'Donna, Donna'.

Also includes his debut LP, 'Torture', titled after his breakthrough hit.

Most of these sides were penned by Nashville's finest songwriters, e.g. the (aforementioned) Bryants, John D. Loudermilk, Bob Montgomery, Roy Orbison & Joe Melson, and Earl Sinks.

Several of Jensen's early, 1960-61 sides, have never previously appeared on CD.

  18. The Complete Singles As & Bs 1944-62 (2CD)

    James Etta:
The Complete Singles As & Bs 1944-62 (2CD) (CD)

Etta James is widely regarded as one of the finest female blues, R&B and soul singers of the modern era, second only in some eyes to Aretha Franklin - Atlantic’s Jerry Wexler called her “the greatest of all modern blues singers”.

    • After a chequered early life, she was discovered in Los Angeles singing with a vocal group at the age of 16 by Johnny Otis, who signed her to Modern, and she scored an R&B No. 1 in 1955 with her debut recording “The Wallflower (Roll With Me Henry)”, a re-working of Hank Ballard’s “Work With Me, Annie”, following it up with another Top 10 R&B hit “Good Rockin’ Daddy”.

    • After recording briefly for Modern subsidiary Kent, she signed to the Chess label, and began recording material that combined the intensity of R&B with the accessibility of pop and the polish of jazz, switching to the Chess sister label Argo in 1960.

    • She hit the pop and R&B charts with more than fifteen records between 1960 and ’62, including Top 5 successes like “All I Could Do Was Cry”, “My Dearest Darling”, “At Last”, “Trust In Me” and “Something's Got A Hold On Me”, before aspects of her life began to unravel in subsequent years.

This great-value 53-track 2-CD set comprises all her A & B sides during those first important years of her career, plus a bonus album version of “Dance With Me Henry”, so it’s a comprehensive overview of her early work.

  19. Something's Got A Hold On Me - Chess & Argo (2LP)

    James Etta:
    Something's Got A Hold On Me - Chess & Argo (2LP) (LP)

    • Etta James’ powerful, versatile and emotionally direct voice could enliven the raunchiest blues (e.g., “I Just Want to Make Love to You”) as well as the subtlest love songs (such as “All I Could Do Is Cry,” or her signature hit, “At Last”). She was one of the most iconic soul singers, with a career that lasted decades. James was as comfortable carrying subtle melodies as she was exploring the more raucous side of the blues.

This double LP collector’s edition includes 27 studio tracks, consisting of the sensational singles – both A- & B-sides – Etta James made in Chicago for the Chess brothers’ Argo and Chess labels, between 1960 and 1962. Unlike her previous R&B recordings for the Modern and Kent labels, in this new stage she sounded more sophisticated, while maintaining her powerful attack. Contained here is the cream of the crop from Etta’s musical legacy.

    • The set also presents a number of James’ lesser-known songs which are just as enjoyable as the unforgettable hits from that period. All of these fabulous recordings have been packaged together in this essential release, which gives ample proof of Etta James’ versatility as well as her rightful place in the R&B and early soul pantheon.

  20. Tears Of Joy (Modern And Kent Sides 1956-1962 (180g)

    James Etta:
Tears Of Joy (Modern And Kent Sides 1956-1962 (180g) (LP)

Etta James was one of the greatest R&B singers of all time, with an incredible soulful voice and an amazing ability to interpret songs from a variety of different musical genres. She sang with unmatched emotional hunger and a pain that could chill the listener.

    • This special release on vinyl includes 18 studio tracks, consisting of a wide selection of those sensational sides Etta James made for the Bihari brothers’ Modern and Kent labels between 1955 and 1961. Highlights include “Good Rockin’ Daddy,” “W-O-M-A-N” (a response to Bo Diddley’s “I’m a Man”), “Hey Henry”, “Be Mine” and “How Big a Fool.” It also features touching mid-tempos (“Tears of Joy”), novelties (“Shortnin’ Bread Rock”), and a convincing attempt to beat Little Richard at his own game (“Tough Lover”), among many other R&B staples.

This set also contains a number of James’ hard to find sides and lesser-known songs which were not originally released as singles (7-inch format). They were included instead on the obscure long play compilation, The Best of Etta James (issued by the Bihari’s subsidiary Crown label in 1961). The compilation features lesser-known songs like “Nobody Loves You Like Me,” and the funny “Hickory Dickory Dock,” as well as the splendid “You Know What I Mean” (which was written by Tamla-Motown’s founder, Berry Gordy, Jr.).

    • These tunes are just as enjoyable as James’ most celebrated numbers from that period. All of these fabulous recordings have been remastered and packaged together in this collector’s edition LP, which gives ample proof of Etta James’ versatility as well as her rightful place in the R&B pantheon. This release contains the cream of the crop from Etta’s early years. Although she was just 16-years old when she started to record for Modern Records, her blossoming talent is evident throughout these seminal sides. Without a doubt, this is the material upon which Etta James’ kingdom was built.
