Still among the best: THE DELTAS return with an impressive "Good Time Guide“ on vinyl

Twenty years after the last recordings, THE DELTAS return with a new album on Diablo Records. „Good Time Guide“ has already been released on limited vinyl in five (!) different colours, This is a review concerning the vinyl mix, recorded by Doyley and produced by DELTAS-guitarplayer Boz Boorer.

In the beginning of 2016 a CD-Version with three extra tracks will follow – mixed by Doyley. These frame conditions are outstanding. Well, so is the band. Back in the days THE DELTAS where one oft he leading bands in the intersection between Rockabilly and Psychobilly, a missing link between traditions and the untamed approach of the eighties underground. The first demo was released in 1980 so here we meet a bunch of genre inventors. If you are asking yourself if this return as recording artists will measure up to your expectations I can only say: Yes! Just take a listen to „Alligator Wine“, an ode to the drink SCREAMIN‘ JAY HAWKINS eternized in 1958. It sounds like a perfect mixture between the magic of nostalgic rockabilly-obscurities, and the raw energy of the Klubfoot days. The performance is damn cool and makes the whole thing timeless. This is good news? I got even better news for you: This is only one single track and the rest is equally cool.

Where should I start to describe this album? Maybe with the trucker hymn „80 Minute Drive“, that is not the track featuring Jeff Mead on Steel Guitar. Though Jeff Mead was helping Sonny George (PLANET ROCKERS) to get his solo-truck rolling. The song is driven by distinctive vocals and a precise rhythm guitar, both wrapped in a lot of reverb. Did you ever try to record something alike? It’s not as easy as it seems. To much effect will mess everything up. To little will miss the mood you want to create. Here it is perfect. You can hear the spring oft he spring reverb vibrating in some more percussive guitar bars. The rhythm section is keeping everything together with a selfless performance. This is bloody brillant!

In „Six Pack To Go“ (who doesn’t know these moments, when six bottles of beer in a card can safe a life?) Jeff Mead accompanies a song that conveys the positive vibes when you can have one ore two last drinks in the morning – best together with friends. It sounds lively and the country-element is coming in like an ironic twinkle of the eye. Apropos: „Wreck Your Country“ is a dirty piece of Rock’n’Roll that sounds slightly overdriven as if the band was about to blow the studio fuses the very next moment with a catchy tune. I guess these guys could make any song sound great. At least when working in the Diablo-environment. While „Money Where Your Mouth Is“ is on the more vehement side of rocking, too, songs like „Kiss N‘ Tell“ (once again featuring pedal steel by Jeff Mead) is a true neorockabilly gemn with an ease and lightness, that is infecting. Same goes for the closing number „Hoochie Mamas“ that brings a dirt stained version of Memphis-sound and the allurement if Hoochie, tight dressed women together. Don’t be astonished about the lipstick traces on your neck. You are under the spell of THE DELTAS.
