Wilson Kim:
Blues And Boogie Vol. 1 (CD)

Kuvaus

Kim WIlson was/is the front man with the Fabulous Thunderbirds, although these days the band is really just him and some hired hands. He is undoubtedly one of the world's finest blues harmonica players - not just electric Chicago blues harp, listen to his album 'The Memphis Barbecue Sessions' with Big Jack Johnson where he plays completely acoustically - stunning. I think that since the breakup of the original Thunderbirds his solo albums have been a bit patchy, 'Tigerman' was a fabulous record with every track a classic but nothing else has really matched it (up to now!) for that consistent quality.

This new album features Kim doing personal favourites by artists who have inspired him throughout his career, not just harmonica players like Little Walter, Sonny Boy Williamson and James Cotton but also blues legends like Elmore James, John Lee Hooker, Jimmy Rogers, Big Maceo Merriweather, Lightnin' Hopkins and Magic Sam.

The album was recorded in California using various West Coast musicians including guitarists Billy Flynn, Big Jon Atkinson, Bob Welch and Nathan James, on bass Larry Taylor, Kadar Roy or Troy Sandow, with the late Barrelhouse Chuck on piano and Marty Dodson, Malachi Johnson or the late Richard Innes on drums.

The album may have been recorded in California but it sounds as authentic as anything recorded in Chicago or Memphis, with everything sounding wonderful, especially Kim's harp (diatonic and chromatic) which has amazing tone and just the right amount of dirt and grit. I'm not really a fan of backward-looking cod vintage records but Kim has really caught the sound and spirit of the kind of blues that I grew up listening to in the 60s. And it's not just about his excellent harp playing and equally good vocals, the whole band are sensational and the record is a fine memorial to the late Richard Innes and Barrelhouse Chuck, whose piano playing is a joy on every track that he appears on.
